“In this memetic age, the context of originality is shifted. Instead of focusing on a godlike singular creation, the focus is now on making the most wildly unique mutation.” — Lil Internet, New Models podcast, episode 63, 7 April 2021
The title of the project “COUNTER JENNY” is inspired by the 2013 film Center Jenny, directed by Ryan Trecartin. In the film, all the characters are Jenny, acting in ways that render them pale copies of what it once meant to be human.
In the space at StudyForArtPlatform, we encounter the old white chair that runs like a thread through the project “komposition med stol”, surrounded by black monobloc chairs. Made from polypropylene and moulded in a single piece, the monobloc chair is often described as the most common chair in the world. Its constant presence everywhere from gardens to conflict zones has given rise to a form of anxiety — “monobloc anxiety” — a feeling of alienation in a world of global consumption and cultural homogenisation. In the project “Komposition med stol (4): COUNTER JENNY”, where the monobloc chair stands in contrast to the white, handmade chair, Dylan Murray asks how mass-produced and homogeneous design can function as an abstraction of the self, and at the same time how the standardised can be used to formulate a resistance to the very world from which it emerges.
