Erik Uddén’s practice treat painting as a physical body encountered in space, inviting viewers to move around and relate to it. The sculptural aspects of his work are central, both in the application of paint and in the stretcher frame that he reshapes and modifies with found materials such as shoemakers’ lasts from his parents’ farm or scrap wood from his studio floor. Uddén states, “My work is a grounded presence in space, yet also a painting to enter and explore. Through its surface, color, and traces of motion, the viewer is drawn into the painting itself. Multiple modes of engagement occur simultaneously, as several bodies negotiate their relation to one another.
